Philip Whalen papers, [194-]-2001.

Consists of writings (notebooks, poems, prose works), correspondence, professional papers, artwork and personal papers that detail Whalen's dual life as a poet and later Buddhist monk. Notebooks record his daily experiences and observations including interactions with other poets and writers associated with the Beat scene, trips including to the Sierras and notably his two extensive stays in Japan and his study of Zen Buddhism and his association with the San Francisco Zen Center. Correspondence with colleagues Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, Leslie Scalapino and Miriam Sagan, among others, often included literary manuscripts sent to Whalen, and with family including sister Velna Whalen.

Irwin Allen Ginsberg was born on June 3, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey to Louis and Naomi (Levy) Ginsberg. American poet, author, lecturer, and teacher who was one of the core members of the Beat Generation of American author's in the 1950's and early 1960's along with Jack Kerouac, William S. Leslie Scalapino (1947-2010) is a California Bay Area poet, scholar, experimental prose writer associated with the "Language School" poetry movement, and founding editor of O Books (Oakland, Calif.).
